    NEWS

    See's candy fundraiser

We are excited to begin our See's Candies fundraiser!  All proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards a Rock Climbing Wall for the students!  Since all of the students will benefit from this fundraiser, we greatly appreciate everyone's participation.  You can help us reach our goal by taking orders from friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers.  Famous for American-made deliciousness with no added preservatives, See's is easy to sell because people love the candy!  The top seller will win a tablet!  A pizza party will be awarded to the top selling class; and the top participating class will receive a popsicle party! Delivery of the candy will be during the first week of December.  The fundraiser ends November 9th.

    The Facts of Lice

Lice infest people regardless of social status and personal hygiene -- in fact, they LIKE clean hair.  Head lice are almost as widespread and contagious as the common cold.  Lice are mostly spread through head to head contact.  They can also be transmitted by sharing personal items such as brushes, combs, hair ties, helmets, headphones, towels, hats, etc.  Storing personal items within close proximity can result in transmission.  Lice can be passed very quickly to other family members: 85% siblings, 75% mothers, 20% fathers and 50% nannies, babysitters or housekeepers.  Lice cannot jump or fly, they crawl.  Lice cannot be "caught" from pets.

Tips To Help Keep Your Child Lice Free

*Teach your child to never share hats, combs, brushes, ties, towels, helmets, ipod earphones, pillows, sleeping bags, etc.

*Keep long hair up in a braid and coated with hair product.  Studies have shown that herbs such as rosemary and citronella can help REPEL head lice.

*DO NOT wash the hair every day.  Build up of natural oils and hair products "coat" the hair shaft making attaching more difficult.

*Store all jackets, backpacks, etc in separate cubbies and in a sealed bag.

*DO WEEKLY CHECKS.  Using a metal comb specifically for lice removal is the best way to find and remove small nits.

*Recognize the SYMPTOMS of head lice which include ITCHING at scalp; small RED BUMPS or SORES on the neck and/or scalp

    WHAT'S HAPPENING AT PIONEER...

    thank you arri

Upon learning of Pioneer's Parents Club recent loss, 4th grade student  Arri Ferrell wanted to do something to help.  After contacting the Parents Club, she coordinated a water bottle donation collection.  The bottles of water were to be sold at the upcoming Pioneer Harvest Festival.  The Pioneer and Brentwood Community quickly rallied around Arri with their donations.  Arri's efforts were a success--she was able to present to the Parents Club $420!!  We thank you Arri for your selfless generosity and your willingness to help!

    Pioneer Alumni Visit

It was a reunion of sorts when Pioneer Alumni, Kat Avdienko, recently delivered lunches to the Pioneer Staff.  Working Wonders, an adult day program in which Kat attends, has partnered with local business, Dino's Sandwich Shop, to deliver lunches. Working Wonders is helping young adults with disabilities learn work skills & Dino’s will be donating a percentage pf the sales generated to Working Wonders. It's a "win-win" for everyone!  Pictured here are Carole Silagi, Pioneer Secretary, Kat Avdienko, and Christine Schwab, Director of Working Wonders.
